Interior Design Tips To Refresh Your Home With Artwork

Artwork does more than simply decorate your walls—it can transform a house into a welcoming, personal haven. Well-chosen pieces reflect who you are, set the tone for each room, and can even influence the mood of anyone who enters. Below, we’ll explore why artwork is so impactful, highlight a few room-by-room considerations, and share new ways to showcase your art—including my favorite styling tips.

Why Artwork Matters

Artwork is a powerful form of self-expression that can unify a space, create focal points, and infuse rooms with personality. A single compelling piece has the power to shift a room’s energy, while a thoughtful gallery wall can tell a story about your travels, interests, and experiences. Whether you prefer bright abstracts or gentle landscapes, choosing and displaying pieces that resonate with you will instantly elevate the ambiance of your home.

Artwork in Specific Rooms

Living Room

The living room is often the main gathering area for friends and family, making it an ideal spot for a bold statement piece or a beautifully curated gallery wall. Because this space typically accommodates larger seating arrangements, you’ll want the artwork to hold its own—without overwhelming the room.

Tip: Hang your piece(s) at eye level, which is roughly 57–60 inches from the floor to the center of the artwork. If you’re arranging multiple frames, maintain a consistent gap of 2–4 inches between each piece for a balanced look.

Dining Room

The dining room sets the tone for shared meals and conversations. Artwork here can add warmth and sophistication, especially if your dining area leans formal. Alternatively, playful or eye-catching prints can energize a more casual dining space.

Tip: Pick a piece (or series of pieces) that complements the table’s shape and size. For a polished look, center the artwork on the wall and keep frame spacing consistent if you’re hanging multiple prints.

Bedroom

Your bedroom is your personal retreat—an oasis where you begin and end each day. Calming or meaningful artwork can contribute to a restful environment, helping you unwind and recharge.

Tip: Placing artwork above or opposite the bed draws attention to the room’s focal point. Ensure the art’s scale feels balanced; if it’s a single piece, aim for about two-thirds the width of your headboard.

Home Office

A home office is more than just a desk and a computer—it’s a space where you need focus and inspiration. Artwork that motivates or reflects your passions can help fuel productivity and creativity.

Tip: Position your artwork when seated behind your desk for video calls or directly in your line of sight. Opt for prints that won’t feel distracting but still spark positive energy.

Kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, and a bit of art can make it feel even more inviting. Whether you opt for smaller framed prints or whimsical illustrations, introducing art in unexpected areas can add charm.

Tip: Lean or hang smaller pieces on open kitchen shelving, or display art on blank wall space near the breakfast nook. Choose frames or materials that can be easily wiped clean to handle kitchen steam and grease.

Hallways & Entryways

These transitional spaces can set the stage for the rest of your home. A simple yet striking piece in your entryway can welcome guests with a unique style statement, while hallways offer an opportunity to create a mini-gallery of smaller prints.

Tip: Keep frames slim and frames low-profile in narrow hallways to prevent accidental bumps. In the entry, pick a piece that captures your home’s aesthetic at a glance, centering it at eye level.
